My mother was standing out in the hallway, and I ran out there + A Second Gunner + 35 to hug and kiss her. It had been quite a while since we had seen each other. We could hear my dad in the colonel's office. Dad was a tough man. When he wanted to say something, he would say it with no beating around the bush. "Colonel, I don't give a damn who in the hell you are or who you represent, but I'm taking my son home for Christmas," he said. "If I have to take him home without clothes, I'm going to do it.

He looked at us and said, "You two," pointing at my two white friends, "can come in, but this guy," pointing at me, "will have to stay out here. " So right away I thought to myself, here I am back in Alliance, Nebraska, with this racism thing all over again. It was such a let-down feeling for me after being honored by my people and being treated like a human being the way a man should feel about himself. These guys have the privilege of going into this place, but I don't. There's something awfully wrong about this.

Then one of my friends wanted to go down to the American Legion Club. " I had my uniform on, all my decorations plus the Korean patch. These two guys hadn't even been overseas. Finally, I went with them. We went up to the American Legion door, and one of the guys pressed the little buzzer. A Mexican bartender peeked out the window. It was one of 38 • C HAP T E R • III those one-way windows where he could see us but we couldn't see him. One of my friends was drunk, getting obnoxious and pressing on the buzzer constantly.
