My father had told me how he, his brothers, and his father fought gun battles with the Klan in North Carolina in the 1890s.  My father's family was eventually driven out of that area after several gun battles, during one of which the log cabin in which they lived was burned down.  Those concepts were very meaningful to me because they built on some of my high school readings, such as Jane Addam's Hull House, Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice and Karl Marx's Das Kapital, which helped convince me that the problems of misery for the poor could only be corrected by changing capitalism to socialism.

Many blacks made it known that they were more concerned with ending discrimination so they could live as equal human beings here and now.  An insurance group, the International Worker's Order, serviced these language groups quite successfully for many years.  Then I discovered that most of the active leaders were unfamiliar with the academic background of the Party theories and relied instead on current orders and directives from the top national leaders.  Our speakers continually Page 27 competed with IWW leader "Big" Jim Thompson who frequently spoke on Skid Road on the corner of Washington and Occidental streets in Seattle—an area which has been redesigned by the city planners and has lost its identity with its past.

It was very clear that Walker had no intention of going back to Seattle to work with Noral. " I couldn't back out after making that commitment.  I found it to be a full time job to read and try to understand those many publications.  They believed right and justice belonged on their side, protesting against imperialist war, supporting the shingle weavers' picket line, marching for unemployment insurance, saving the Scottsboro boys, organizing industrial red trade unions, and fervently defending the Soviet Union against threatened imperialist war.
