To date, however, few politically progressive movements in this country have fully incorporated the specificity of the woman-of-color experience into their analyses of oppression or their liberation strategies. In the meantime, women of color continue to organize. S. women of color have been actively involved in the issues of immigrant rights, Indigenous peoples’ water and land rights, women in prison, militarism, reproductive rights, domestic violence, gang intervention, police brutality, queer youth support, and more.

The ground it stands on is built upon a knowing for which I can make no clear accounting. I never met one of my Yaqui ancestors; never a relative who named us anything but Mexican so Mexican it is, a x i C a n a D y K e C o D e x o f C hanging ConsCiousness but since my earliest childhood I knew Mexican meant Indian. And it was the naming of “Chicano” in the seventies that reminded me of that fact and that sent most of my relatives into political hiding. So, I knew “Indian” was dangerous, like lesbianism.
